Be Wary Of Student Travel Discounts

As a student attending a University that is far from home, I thought student discounts would be a great way to get home (and visit friends) for cheap. I mean for once, being a student would be an advantage. I should have known that such was not the case. I visited a site called www.counciltravel.com, "the world's leader in student travel".
The site is very easy to follow, and at first you will think that you stumbled onto something great. You start off by typing in the usual: destination and departure city, dates, times etc. Then they give you some quotes that match what your looking for. So far so good, the quotes usually come up very inexpensive.
The problem comes when you want to actually purchase the ticket. Just to be safe, I decided to call their reservation phone number, to make sure I was getting what I wanted (by the way I was on hold for 40 min listening to crappy college bands).
So when I get the same quote that I got on the internet I was ready to buy the tickets....I curiously asked what my grand total would be. She quoted me a price that was grossly higher than what the original quote on the web site was, 107 dollars higher to be exact. Apparently Taxes on domestic flights are 97 dollars?? This was news to me since every time I would book priceline.com tickets they would never tax me like that.On top of ridiculous taxes, they force you to get a council travel student ID to "enjoy the wonderful student rates" they offer.
You've got to be kidding me, the original quote itself wasn't anything to write home about, but add an extra 100 dollars and the ticket is a rip off. A word of advice, www.hotwire.com is a great site where you know the FINAL price you're going to pay, no $100 surprises, and the rates are great.
