Hello epinions community!
I am writing this to help 'clear up' a few issues that you all seem to be having with this ad. I already wrote some of this content in comments on other's reviews, but I want to get these points across to everyone.
1) I am not some lunatic bent on killing inanimate objects. Those of you who feel that way are missing the point of the commercial. Never once in the commercial do I fly off the handle and waste everyone in the room, or take pot shots at Steve Jobs photo, and I don't breathe heavily and cross my eyes either. I shoot a legal handgun, in a controlled environment, with eye and hearing protection, at an inanimate, albeit expensive, target. That is about as responsible as you can get when it comes to gun control.
2) The commercial is SUPPOSED to turn heads. Commercials that don't turn heads are a waste of marketing money, like the everyday, run-of-the-mill soap commercial.
3) Good or Bad, publicity is publicity. For example. My iMAC review is probably one of the most hated on epinion's site. 70% or more do not recommend it. Yet it has over 1100 page views and gets more on a daily basis. It even earned me the opportunity to do this ad. Did the McDonald's hot coffee lawsuit hurt their business? Hardly. ** I am perfectly aware that McDonalds did not stage that lawsuit and was a bad analogy, so here is a better one**
Did Jenny McCarthy get bad publicity for doing the shoe ad while she was sitting on the toilet? Yes. How's her career doing? Odds are, a lot better than yours and mine. (especially my acting career *wink* *wink*)
4) If everyone is so concerned about gun control, why do we still make TV shows like NYPD Blue, and have movies like Last Action Hero and Bambi (yes, Bambi's mother got SHOT by a hunter). Until our Congress takes away our rights to own and responsibly fire guns, and our right to free speech, this is a perfectly legit advertisement. It shows that you should not be afraid to speak negatively about a product on the site. **By the way concerned viewers, I am not in jail yet, so apparently I have not done anything wrong**
5) I am a huge advocate of epinions.com and do not want to see anything bad happen to the company, so I appreciate everyone's comments on this ad. But keep in mind that the ad is supposed to lure people to the site, not necessarily buy a product. Even if people come to the site just to write a negative comment about my ad, I am prepared to accept that for the greater good of the company. Chances are they will see the site layout and click on a few more reviews and get hooked (like I did). And in order to post a comment. . .they have to sign up for epinions.
6) New comment. . . I am also aware that this commercial may not be best suited for family advertising, but I do think it is completely appropriate to air during commercial breaks of shows that normally contain "Mature" topics. Most evening TV cartoons even fall into this category (South Park, Simpsons, Family Guy), not to mention all of the cop shows and new sitcoms (Malcom in the middle, et. al.). If you let your kids watch these shows, I have a feeling they will not pick up bad habits from this commercial. But I digress. . .End New Comments
So will this ad achieve its goal of getting people to visit epinions.com? YES, I think so!
All of you have watched it so far right?
Vote YOUR opinion of the ad please. . .not what you think everyone else will think. That is their job. If you liked it and think it was funny, Vote for it! Thanks!
