Too Much Censorship at Epinions? Bah, Not Nearly Enough!
Sep 22 '00
Censorship--it's a frequently tossed about word at Epinions, generally discussed by far too liberal minded types who always seem to think there's too much of it. Well, I do not agree--in fact, I don't think there's enough of it, even in the very Epinions framework itself.
The WOT
I realize I am new here, and perhaps unfamiliar with some of the more liberal, even swinging ideals of today, but I do think I can recognize when a line needs to be drawn. At Epinions in general, there is simply far too much discussion of WOTs, and quite frankly, I do not think it's a suitable topic for a family audience.
There was a time not too long ago when discussions of a lady's WOT would not have been tolerated in any sort of polite society, but no, here at Epinions, WOTs are not only discussed, but publicly advertised! Comments sections are simply ablaze with who's adding whom to whose WOTs, who is worming his or her way into or up someone else's WOT or being expunged from another's WOT. How many times have I read comments like "Excellent review! You just made it into my WOT". Good grief, not even dinner first?
The WOT is an extremely popular review topic--a few titles I have observed: "My Shrinking WOT", "MY Growing WOT" and the far too personal "In Appreciation of My WOT". Honestly, I have taken women's studies classes that were less flagrant. Even the Epinions site itself suggests an investigation of someone else's WOT, to help you discover your (ahem) preferences, which of course, only leads to more WOT investigations and additions. Does it not strike any of you as rather odd that the more people one has in his or her WOT, the more money he or she is eventually bound to make? Brings to mind an age old profession.
The WOD
I do not know what the WOD is, yet I am certain it is as disgusting, if not moreso, than the WOT. Certain free thinkers would have you believe their tired old line about "getting all the facts" before you make a judgment. I suggest they go tell it to someone who finds it even remotely relevant. Generally speaking, jumping to conclusions is totally underrated as an intellectual pursuit.
The JUST IN Page
"Just in"?! This is the best terminology they can come up with? Sure, some will argue that this expression is fairly harmless and innocent, and simply means "new reviews"--please, I beg you, don't be so naive. Perhaps you could make such a case in a more wholesome environment, but in light of the WOT, it is totally outrageous. I think we all know what you are getting at, and we don't all approve.
I am sure that the liberals, with their rock and roll music and their crack cocaine will disapprove of what I say--so be it. Be forewarned, there is at least a contingent one one, who knows exactly what you are up to.
And just stop thinking about my WOT!
