I have been using Send More Info since March ’00. At first, I thought it was a great way to get information I was interested in sent to me, and make some money on the side at the same time. Now, eight months later, it’s a running joke to see how long it will take me to earn my first check.
Send More Info is an internet based company which sends emails to users advertising various other companies. The user must click on a link which directs the user to a website, advertising the company, which usually asks you for information to sign up and join as a member. Once the user has visited this site, 5 cents are credited to the user’s account. Direct referrals earn the user 2 cents for every email they receive and respond to. There are no extended referrals. Users get to choose up to ten interests out of a group of around 120 to receive emails related to those subjects. These interests include, for example, Pets, Computers, Men’s Health, Cooking and Religion. Users can change their interests at any time. Now and then, Send More Info will also send out an email advertising “bonus 25 cents if you sign up with so and so”. There is a $10 minimum pay out which you can increase if you choose to.
Let’s see what good things I can think of about Send More Info.
Well, they’re still around. Many pay-to-surf sites have slowly disappeared due to lack of advertiser support. I can’t say that I trust the company since I have never received a check from them as of yet. Sometimes the information they send me is actually interesting and I do go join up. Well okay, “sometimes” was probably five at the most. Their website is easy to navigate and easy to use. Okay, I think I just squeezed out the last bit of good that I could think of. On with the bad.
The biggest problem I have with Send More Info is their advertising when I first joined. I distinctly remember their site saying, “If you receive 20 emails in a day, that’s an easy $1!” I thought, “they MUST be exaggerating, so I’ll expect at least 10 a day if they’re saying 20.” It’s perfectly legal to point out the obvious, but I figured they wouldn’t say 20 if they couldn’t send out at least half the amount. That same day I received a few emails, and the next day I again received a few more. It was less than 10 in two days, but I was still excited about how easy that money was to get. I scrounged up six referrals during the next couple days and thought I could be expecting my first check pretty soon.
I waited a week and no new emails. I had a bad feeling about that, but didn’t worry. It was no skin off my back. I just had to click a couple links to get the money. Eight months later, I still have not made the minimum pay-out amount! I usually receive one email a week, but sometimes I might actually get two. Wow. Ten cents a week. I must be dreaming! Five of my referrals stopped using the program so I don’t get to earn any extra money through them.
I have also noticed that I receive the same email over and over again. It’s as if Send More Info only has a small handful of advertisers working with them. These advertisers usually aren’t even related to any of my ten chosen Interests. I find that rather amusing that Send More Info is probably just sending out whatever they have. These emails have consistently been contests for the past few months as well. They’ll ask you to sign up with so and so to enter a chance to win such and such prize (money, a car, etc.). Towards the bottom of the screen are check boxes with subscriptions to newsletters. Of course, these boxes are all already checked off so that when you enter to win the prize you end up signing up with the company as well as 14 different pieces of junk mail subscriptions.
As I mentioned earlier, they have offered a bonus 25 cents for signing up with so and so. I have received many of these, but only signed up for one. It was the same format with the check boxed subscriptions. I went through and unchecked all but one subscription (because I was actually interested) and signed up. It literally took three months, but I finally received an email from them informing me that my 25 cents has been credited to my account.
My last complaint about Send More Info is no longer a problem, but I wanted to mention it. Within each email they send you, there is also a direct link to your account so that you can easily check your account status. Hey, that’s a pretty good feature. But, tacked on to the end of the URL, in its entirety, is your password. This is no problem for anyone at home where privacy is not an issue, but for those whose account is through a public library, work, networked with other computers, or even simply by having roommates, this could be a problem. All someone has to do is have someone look over your shoulder and they’ve got your password. Many people also tend to use the same password for several different accounts. I don’t know when they fixed it exactly, but I noticed in October that the password has been exchanged with an IP address and a few other characters.
I definitely do not recommend Send More Info to anyone that is expecting to earn money or gain any “Info”. I’m hanging in there to see how much longer it will take to get my first check. Four more months, maybe? It isn’t necessarily a waste of time since it doesn’t take much effort to sign up, click on the links and get your change, but it’s annoying enough that you won’t want to bother.
